Trainee Roles 2015

We’re looking for 10 people to fill our unique trainee roles for 2015. Each role will take on a specific area of responsibility and develop specific skills and experience in community food growing, local food distribution and horticulture training.

These roles are aimed at people who want to develop skills to make a livelihood from community food work. The roles are voluntary. The roles run from the week commencing 30th March to the week of 21st December 2015.

This will be the fifth year of our traineeship programme. The majority of trainees from previous years have since found work in community food growing.

The roles:

  • Grower (Plants and Production) trainee (two roles) – 9 months, 1.5 days per week.
    This role will develop skills in all aspects of vegetable production in the market garden.

  • Grower to Grocer trainee – 9 months, 1.5 days per week.
    As well as developing skills in vegetable production, this role will focus on preparing produce for a commercial market.

  • Fruit and Vine trainee (two roles) – 9 months, 1 day per week.
    This role will develop the skills required to manage orchards, trained fruit trees and soft fruit bushes, and develop skills in organic wine production and other fruit processing and preserving methods.

  • Distribution trainee (two roles) – 9 months, 1.5 days per week.
    This role will develop skills in harvesting for a commercial market and gain experience in all you need to know to run a local veg box scheme.

  • Volunteer Support trainee – 9 months, 1 day per week.
    The role will develop skills in supporting diverse community members to take part in food growing and have a facilitating role in training other volunteer buddies.

  • Facilitating Learning trainee (two roles) – 3 months, 1 day per week.
    This role will focus on supporting young people aged 14-16 at risk of social exclusion to complete training in horticulture and other outdoor work.

Applicants will be short-listed according to how well they meet the criteria in the person specifications and demonstrate a commitment to sustainable urban food production. Priority will be given to applicants trying to move into employment in the community food sector, who have not had previous opportunities to undertake trainee and apprenticeship roles.
