A workers' cooperative growing food on London's edge in the Lea Valley

We grow food

We believe more food can and should be grown locally and sustainably. At our main site, Hawkwood Plant Nursery, we grow vegetables, fruit, herbs and vegetable seedlings, in the glasshouse and the fields, offering opportunities for all to get involved.

We also have a forest garden, where trees, shrubs and ground cover plants are grown together in a low-maintenance system which imitates the natural ecosystem of a forest.

As Soil Association certified organic growers on our Hawkwood site, it is very difficult to use traditional inputs such as manure and bone meal due to the risk of Genetically Modified, and other, contaminants now endemic in non-organic animal husbandry. See http://veganorganic.net/ for more info on the veganic farming Standards. In 2018 we acquired “Veganic” certification, meaning all our produce grown at Hawkwood is free from any inputs derived from animals, at any stage in the process. We continue to work alongside friends in the Land Workers Alliance who are attempting a more compassionate and proportionate approach to animal farming, and hope to use our certification to engage the bourgening vegan community with the principles of food sovereignty.
