A workers' cooperative growing food on London's edge in the Lea Valley

Asparagus crowns

Friday is one the key volunteer team days at Organiclea’s Hawkwood growing site.  With 500 asparagus crowns to get into compost, over a dozen workers spent the day making asparagus potting-on mix, the recipe being green waste compost, woodchip and sand/fine gravel; wheeling the plants to the Westbank terrace then protecting them from forecast ground frost with a straw mulch.

They will spend their days of summer growth in these containers before going into the ground on the terrace once the raised beds are built in the coming winter. More work for all.
