A workers' cooperative growing food on London's edge in the Lea Valley

‘Build Camp’ Opportunity

** The camp is now fully booked **

Woodland Classroom Completion Build Camp – from 6pm on Tuesday 29 June to afternoon of Sunday 4 July 2021

We are running a five day Build Camp at our Hawkwood site in Chingford from the evening of 29 June to enable us to put the final finishing touches to our Woodland Classroom and we’re keen for ten of you to join us!

Our Woodland Classroom was constructed in 2019 by dozens of volunteers over the course of several two-week build camps with Adrian Leaman from Wholewoods. The result was a beautiful new classroom with a few things still to finish, and we’d like to bring back the build camp experience to complete the build. We will be laying an extensive green roof on the classroom, finishing the cordwood and cob wall, and installing some heaters. The camp will be led by Organiclea coop member and Infrastructure Worker Shannon Thaden, who has already been extensively involved in building many elements of the structure.

We recommend taking part in this as a residential camp, and you bring your own tent, van or caravan to sleep in (non-residential places are also available; please note this request under ‘anthing else you’d like to tell us’ on the booking form). The camp will cost £32 per person for food, and for that we will provide the work, training and support – and the ingredients for us to cook a vegan breakfast, lunch and dinner from Tuesday evening meal to Sunday lunch. You can bring other food if you wish to fill the gaps between meals. We have a mini-fridge and mini-freezer for anything you want to bring along.

To take part you need to be physically fit and competent with tools, and over 18. Camping during the build means living outdoors in basic conditions.

We know it’s a commitment, but we’d love it if you can be with us for the whole of the five days, we will be working 9am-5pm from Wednesday to Saturday (with time for lunch) and 9am – 1pm on the Sunday. Showers are available on site, and working will be Covid safe. We will agree guidelines about how we interact indoors, social distancing, mask wearing etc., as well as providing a space to discuss any concerns you might have about Covid health and safety whilst you are on site with us.

Places will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served basis’, with a waiting list created if needed.
