A workers' cooperative growing food on London's edge in the Lea Valley

Open Day Plant Sale

Open Day and Plant Sale

Sunday 28 August, Hawkwood Nursery

This month’s open day is celebrating the wonderful biodiversity of our Hawkwood growing site and the Lea valley more widely. We hope to get friendly with moths; there will be a tour of the site with wildlife experts Lea Valley Nature Photographers;  a pollinator plant give away (treats for bees and other insects, to help increase biodiversity across the borough); and an opportunity to skill-up and buy seedlings to plant organically for winter. As usual there’s also delicious lunch, coffee and cake served all day, and a forest opportunity for kids.

Seasonal Blitz morning: our new weeekend volunteering opportunity, join us at 9.45 for a 10am-1pm session. We advise sturdy shoes and you are welcome to stay for the Hawkwood monthly Open Day afterwards. Please do let us know in advance if you’d like to join us for the Seasonal Blitz session, by emailing ru[at]organiclea.org.uk or call us on 020 8524 4994.

Open Day (12-4pm)

All afternoon (12 – 4) Coffee, cake and delicious locally grown lunch served. Free pollinator plant give away, plus salad seedling sales – get your winter growing off to a good start. Plus our farm stall for buying Hawkwood produce, photographs by Lea Valley Nature Photographers, and a stand about the new Walthamstow Wetlands project.

12-1pm An encounter with the moths of Hawkwood. Hopefully we’ll have caught (with nothing harmed in the process!) some of our resident moths on Saturday night, for you to see and talk about with nature expert David Cottridge of Lea Valley Nature Photographers.

2-3pm Winter food growing workshop. Get ready for the winter growing season – tips to keep your garden and your plate green over the coming cold months.

3pm Site tour, with a focus on biodiversity. David Cottridge will join us to point out the abundant wildlife we have on site. And we’ll explore how the way we grow supports biodiversity.

12-3pm Hawkwood Woodland School – a drop-in family learning session offering outdoor play and holistic learning for children and families. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please email londonforestschool[at]gmail.com with the name and age of your children if you plan to attend, so we have an idea of numbers. There is no charge for this session.
