A workers' cooperative growing food on London's edge in the Lea Valley

Planting and grafting

This Sunday’s open day at Hawkwood finds us looking ahead to fruitful harvests in the autumn with lots of fruit tree activity. Join us for:

12-1: Grafting workshop – if you plant an apple pip from your favourite apple it won’t grow the same fruit, instead grafting is the key to getting the size and variety of fruit tree you want. Learn more about and have a go at this technique for propagating new trees

1.30-3.30: Plant a tree – help us get the new row of cordon pears into the ground! Pick up planting tips and be part of helping the Hawkwood orchard to grow.

3.30: Site tour – find out more about the history and plans for this stunning 12 acre site, including orchards, salad terraces and the new solar energy project

and all day: information and tips on selecting, planting, pruning and other aftercare of fruit trees and bushes will be available.

All welcome. Open from 12-4, bring a packed lunch if staying for the day (lunch break at 1pm).

Directions here.  Hope to see you there!
