A celebration of bread

This celebration takes place at Lammas time, a traditional festival with Celtic roots to mark the first harvest and the first loaf

Bring your homemade loaf for display at our bread stall and to share with the community There will be information about local food groups and campaigns Café open all day and fresh organic produce on sale

11.00 Lammas Ritual
We want to start the festival in the old pagan way: thanking the earth for the gifts of the first harvest and aligning ourselves with the forces of nature, to make our wishes come true (bring a wish)

11.30 Baking the loaf
Learning to bake bread for beginners of all ages The process will last about 3 hours, with plenty of free time in between stages (Limited numbers, contact Hornbeam on 020 8558 6880 to book your place)

12.00 Bakers’ corner
Come and learn all about sourdough starters, share recipes, questions and tips

12.30 till 16.00 Dough sculpture
Get your hands stuck into some dough Drop in art activity for all ages

13.30 Film: "Our daily bread"
To the rhythm of conveyor belts and immense machines, Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s sharp documentary examines the places where food is produced in Europe: monumental spaces, surreal landscapes and bizarre sounds - a cool, industrial environment. The film casts an unblinking gaze on the food-processing industry and urges us to ponder the origins of the foodstuffs we swallow each day. With an introduction from one of the Hornbeam bakers

16.00 Talk by Andrew Whitley
Founder of "The Village Bakery" and passionate advocate of good bread, Andrew Whitley will speak about his bread journey and The Real Bread campaign. Copies of his book "Bread Matters" will be available for sale.

17.30 Eating the Lammas loaf
We'll finish the day sharing the stuff of life - bread, beer and poetry - and hoping for plentiful future harvests
