What's on
The good food swap is a celebration of our local harvest, a chance to share food you've made, grown, picked or found. And in preparation you can learn something new or share your skills at workshops through August, September, October. Download a flyer or see details here. New box scheme at the Hornbeam Centre: Organiclea is working with the Hornbeam Centre to set up a new organic box scheme, starting Wednesday 2nd July. The produce is supplied by Eostre Organics farmers co-operative who already supply the Saturday market stall. The scheme is collection only - the Hornbeam Centre will be open on Wednesdays 3.30-7.30pm so you can pick up your bag of pre-ordered fruit and veg, and have a cup of tea at the same time! There will be a late pickup arrangement in case you can’t make it on a Wednesday.
Selling Allotment Produce: Is it legal? Is it right? A discussion paper from Organiclea explores the ups and downs of selling surplus food grown on allotment sites. Concerned about food safety, want to cut down on food miles and eat quality local fruit and veg, baked goods and freshly made food? A weekly organic market is held on Saturdays from 10 til 3 at the Hornbeam Centre in Hoe St, and the Hornbeam cafe is open from 10 til 4. serving tasty fresh food made with local, fair trade and organic ingredients wherever possible. Practical training in growing organic food: Are you interested in growing food and wondering how to get started, or wanting to gain confidence and meet other growers? Organiclea is running once-a-month training sessions in basic organic food growing skills. The course is run on Sunday mornings on our community allotment site in Chingford E4. Organiclea is an official mentor for the national Organic Food For All programme run by Garden Organic. For details see this year's course programme here and contact us if you are interested in joining next year's course (starting November 08). Spare apples and pears? If you've got more fruit than you can handle in your garden, Organiclea can take your surplus. We'll give you 25% of the fruit collected, and the rest is distributed to voluntary food projects in the Borough and the picking volunteers. New weeky market stall: the first regular stall of its kind in Waltham Forest, the Saturday organic market stall at the Hornbeam Centre is supplied by Eostre Organics, a farmers' coop from Norfolk who work with other cooperatives across Europe. Also for sale is ultra-local East London organic produce - grown and harvested by people in the borough, and freshly baked bread and pickles and preserves. Tree Festival: For all tree enthusiasts, an opportunity to celebrate our local trees together took place on Saturday 26th January 10-5 at the Hornbeam Centre, 458 Hoe St (corner of Hoe St and Bakers Avenue, E17). With talks, practical demonstrations, children's activities, art and storytelling, tasty tree-related food and drink. Food for Thought: A day and eve of discussions, revelations and revels, seasoned with good food and fine drinks, on Saturday 5th May at the Hornbeam Environmental Centre and Forest Recycling Project (at the corner of Hoe Street and Bakers Avenue, E17).
