Intro : Distribution : Forest Garden : Fruit-picking : Co-op : Permaculture Distribution At the end of a Sunday work day, volunteers take home a bag of seasonally available produce. We have run a series of community based stalls and events in Walthamstow. This has included stalls outside the Hornbeam Environment Centre on Hoe Street and 'cafe nights' at the Vegetarian Cafe at 458 Hoe Street. These cafe nights use our freshly harvested produce for a sizzling feast. We have held stalls with an exhibition at a range of local summer fayres. Throughout 2004 and 2005, we have worked on a specific project with North Leyton Surestart. This has involved distributing fresh organic produce to their Surestart's parent food and nutrition club in Leyton. Surestart subsidised the produce sales in order to ensure that the organic food is affordable. Our aim in distribution is to show what can be grown locally, educate about the benefits of organic food and collective food growing and create community around the distribution of local food. We're always open to new collaborations and ideas about how we distribute our quality produce. A local food scheme in Waltham Forest? Local food schemes can bring huge benefits in social, environmental, health, economic and cultural spheres. We're interested in exploring the the desirabilities, possibilities and practicalities of a Waltham Forest Local Food Scheme. This report makes the case for local food schemes in general and for the London Borough of Waltham Forest in particular. It sets out the benefits and the extent to which greater awareness of these benefits has led to increasing interest in healthy, sustainable and local food nationwide.
